Perfect for those socks!

Stretchy cast on.

Ok..when you’re making socks it’s very important that your cast on is stretchy. There are many cast ons out there and you may have a favourite. If you do…go for it!

If you don’t, I have a few suggestions.

You could use Jenys super stretchy cast on. It’s tried and tested and works.

You could do a cable cast on…this has a bit more stretch than a normal cast on

For this what you do is….
Make a slip knot and out it on the left hand needle

Now…knit into the stitch but, instead of pushing the stitch off the needle, slip the loop back on to the left hand needle. Making two stitches.

Next, put the tip of the right hand needle BETWEEN the two stitches, wrap the yarn around the needle as you would normally do when you knit a stitch and pull the yarn towards you BUT, after you have pulled the yarn forward, slip the new stitch on to the left hand needle, making a new stitch. You’ll now have three sts on the left hand needle.
Now, repeat as,above.

Continue like this until you have the required number of stitches

Or you could try mine…I find mine is even more stretchy and works really well for socks!

Ultimately it’s up to you…but…what you shouldn’t do, what you must never, ever do…is use any normal everyday cast on. Basically it won’t be stretchy enough and the socks won’t go on!…all your hard work will be wasted!

Super stretchy cast on!..my way

This cast on is great for socks or maybe a neckline for a child, as it’s very stretchy. It starts off like a knitted cast on…

Ok..make a slip knot and place on the left hand needle as you would normally when doing a knitted cast on.

Next…
Insert the right hand needle into the stitch, wrap the yarn round as if to knit and pull it through the stitch.

Now, this is where it changes from a normal knitted cast on! At this point you DON’T put the stitch onto the needle. Instead you do a yarn over by moving the yarn from back to front between the needles and over the right needle back to the knit position.

Next, pull the yarn through the stitch on the right hand needle and take that stitch off the needle. The yarn over is now on the needle as a stitch.

Place this stitch onto the left needle and pull the yarn tight

You’ve made a new stitch.

Repeat this until you have the number of stitches you need
